Anthony Payne ‘’1923 Events & personalities 100 years ago’’ 8th February 23

At our meeting of Whitehaven U3A, on 8th February, Anthony Payne gave an interesting and informative talk about 1923, one hundred years ago, on the events and famous people born or died in that year.

Mr Payne opened the meeting showing an illustrated edition of “The Saturday Evening Post”. JC Leyendecker who was credited with this illustration was a talented and artistic man who specialised in fine art for Fashion magazines. The work began around 1910 and ended around 1950 when photography took over.

THE YEAR 1923
• January 20th Slim Whitman was born, popular in 1950.s for his music.
• February 5th Actress Dora Bryan was born.
• February 10th William Rontgen died, he discovered x-rays.
• February 13th Chuck Yeager was born who broke sound barrier.
• March 4th Patrick Moore was born. An astronomer, composer, pianist and credited with running the longest television programme.
• March 22nd Marcel Marceau born – an influential member of ballet.
• April 12th Kandersteg International Scout centre comes to Switzerland, founded by Robert Baden Powell.
• April 26th Prince Albert Duke of York marries Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon later known as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
• April 28th Original Wembley stadium built – West ham beat Bolton 2-0.
• May 4th Eric Skyes born who was deaf.
• May 26th Roy Doltrice born. First Le Mans race held.
• June 10th Robert Maxwell born.
• June 12th William Walton’s façade is performed for the first time in London.
• July 6th Wojciech Witold Jaruzelike Polish Army General born.
• August 2nd Shimon Perez, 8th Prime Minister of Israel recipient of Nobel Peace Prize.
• August 13th Gustav Stresemann named Chancellor of Germany.
• August 21st Larry Grayson born formerly William White.
• August 29th Richard Attenborough born, an actor in war films who directed Ganhdi.
• September 7th Interpol set up in Vienna. Dr Johann Schober appointed chief of Vienna Police.
• September 29th The British Mandate of Palestine comes into effect.
• September 30th Donald Swann composer born.
• October 13th Ankara replaces Istanbul as Capital of Turkey.
• October 16th Roy and Walt Disney found Walt Disney Company.
• October 24th Sir Robin Day excellent journalist born.
• October 27th Roy Lichtenstein, American Pop artist born.
• November 8th The Beer Hall Putsch also known as Munich Putsch was a failed coup d’etat by Nazi Party leader Adolf Hilter.
• December 2nd Maria Callas born - the successful soprano.
• December 27th Gustave Eiffel dies. In 1889 Eiffel tower was the highest building in the world topping the Pyramids.
