TRACEY WEST - ‘’Sellafield Community Engagement’’ 10th June
his week we had Tracey West come to tell us how Sellafield are supporting the local community. Tracey is the head of the Social Impact dept. and explained how they try to bring social impact into everything they do, including their supply chain which currently adds £1.8 billion to the local economy.
£10 million has been spent on projects with links to BEC, Cumberland Council, Cumbrian Community Foundation and Whitehaven Harbour Commission and last year £11 million was allocated to 68 local projects ranging from £250 to £5742.
Tracey gave us an insight into some of these projects, including the work being done with Coastal Cumbria to develop local tourism and the help given to local charities. She told us about Sellafield’s involvement with The Carlton project in Maryport, with the Buzz Station, the Edge water activity centre & hotel, Levels and many others.
They and their supply chain have contributed to the success of a lot of existing projects too, including helping with the refurbishment of the lighthouses, the Egremont Crab Fair, Rosehill Theatre, Florence Mine, the Rivers Trust, the Youth Alliance, the Beacon Museum and Hospice at Home. A grant of £195,000 was awarded to the Great North Air Ambulance Service last year as well.
Our members really enjoyed Tracey’s presentation and asked quite a few questions afterwards.
